Putting it simply…
More Traffic = More Leads = More Customers = More Sales
Today, I’m going to cover the top 3 traffic sources and give you some serious tips on how to convert more of this traffic.
1. Paid Traffic
1. Search Ads – Google Adwords, Bing ads, …
2. Social Media Ads – Facebook ads, LinkedIn ads, Instagram ads, …
3. Banner Ads – Outbrain, Tamboola, …
The best thing about paid advertising is that you have control over targeting and you control where the ad traffic is directed. This means that you decide where the ad click takes your visitors. You should always direct paid traffic to a landing page and not your website homepage. If you are sending paid traffic to your homepage then you are wasting your money! A homepage is not focused on the visitor completing one particular action. Instead, it is typically a gateway into the rest of your website where the user can decide on many different actions to take.
A landing page is designed specifically to achieve a single action from the visitor. Typically, that single action is for the visitor to opt in. All possible actions that are not related to the goal of the of the page do not exist on good landing pages. This means no navigation menus or links to other pages. It is only possible for the visitor to either perform that single desired action or leave the page (NB: you will need to adhere to the terms of the ad platform which may involve having links to other pages such as your own terms & conditions page).
The beauty of paid traffic is that once you have an ad that converts into profit through your sales funnel, you simply buy more of the same ad to increase your profits.
2. Social Traffic
How good are you at social media and online networking? Do you know what platforms your target audience are using? Positioning yourself as an expert in your field and by having people interact with your posts and profiles is a great way to drive traffic to your site.
At a minimum you need to ensure that your social profiles are complete and optimised. You should also post content that positions you as an expert, content that is related to your services and content that is of great value to your target audience.
It’s recommended to also include a soft call to action in your posts. But… avoid making them a sales pitch. The most important thing is to provide value and educate your audience. If you do this consistently, you will generate leads through social traffic.
3. Organic Traffic
The top sources of organic traffic to your website will likely be through Google and Bing. The search engines rank website pages based on how relevant and authoritative they believe these page are to the search phrase query. The higher a page ranks for the query, the more clicks and traffic it will receive. Hence, the desire for websites to rank highly for relevant search phrases.
Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) is the process of optimising a website’s presence in order to rank well for relative search phrases. SEO is a long term process. It will produce results. But these results take time and most people give up at an early stage due to the work and effort required.
A good SEO campaign will increase organic traffic to your website. But, as mentioned earlier, the pages on your website are not dedicated to a achieving a single goal. To help increase conversions, I recommend a relevant call to action above the fold on every page of your website and retargeting.
Bonus Tactic – Retargeting
Retargeting is a tactic that will increase your conversions. And, as stated earlier:
More Conversions = More Customers = More Sales
Retargeting works by only targeting those people who have recently had an interaction with your website or landing pages. It allows you to present ads, on a platform such as Facebook, to people based upon the interaction that occurred or the content that was viewed.
You know those ads that follow you around the internet? That’s retargeting.
Retargeting is a brilliant tactic that not many businesses employ! I will cover retargeting more thoroughly in another article…
